GameStop Placeholder Art Names Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

gutJc.jpg

While Ubisoft is busy teasing players via Facebook, we've got anonymous tipsters sending us images of the placeholder art for something called Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Ubisoft now confirms that this is indeed the next Assassin's Creed title.

Between this alleged placeholder art and a recent website registration for AssassinsCreedBrotherhood.com, we're pretty sure we've nailed down the name for the next game in the Assassin's Creed series. The box art features our friend Ezio, surrounded by a group of unknown asaassins, presumably representing the brotherhood that appears in the title, as well as the blurb on the back cover.

"Live and breathe as Ezio, now a legendary master assassin, in his struggle against the Templar order. Lead your own brotherhood of Assassins and strike at the heart of the enemy. Rome.

"And for the first time, take part in an innovative multiplayer layer allowing you to embody an assassin of your choosing and define their killing style.

"A never-before-seen online multiplayer experience.

"Lead your own brotherhood of assassins, as Ezio, and conquer Rome."

The art also features a sticker for a preorder exclusive multiplayer character, available only through GameStop. Who wants to bet its Altair?

The information on the box jibes with what we've heard so far about the next Assassin's Creed game, and the name certainly fits. Looks like it's coming to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Hopefully that last one will do a better job with DRM than Assassin's Creed II did.

Of course, without official confirmation by Ubisoft, this is still filed under rumor, but it's a damn good one.

We've contacted Ubisoft for comment, and will update this post should they respond.

Update: An Ubisoft representative has responded, confirming the image as real.

"Ubisoft confirms the authenticity of this image and will provide more information next week."

You heard the rep, more details on Assassin's Creed Brotherhood next week. Stay tuned!

First Assassin's Creed Brotherhood Details Slip From The Shadows

WxgLN.jpg

With a 15 hour long single player adventure, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood is far more than a multiplayer side story in the Assassin's Creed universe. It's time to join the Brotherhood, as Ubisoft details Ezio's continuing adventures.

So far the buzz about Assassin's Creed Brotherhood has been all about the multiplayer, and the game does indeed feature a deep multiplayer experience. While the production is being led by Ubisoft Montreal, work is also being done at Ubisoft studios in Singapore, Bucharest, Québec City and Annecy, with Annecy being the developer behind the excellent multiplayer side of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.

Players will be able to choose between multiple character classes with signature weapons and killing moves, competing against online friends in a wide variety of unique multiplayer modes. The fact sheet boasts "you'll never fight the same way twice."

It sounds pretty amazing, but is Ubisoft neglecting the single player experience in favor of multiplayer? It sure doesn't look like it.

Ezio, now a Master Assassin, travels to the "living, breathing" city of Rome to experience more than 15 hours of single-player game play. While he's there he'll hob nob with famous historical figures like Leonardo da Vinci, Niccolo Machiavelli and Caterina Sforza, while recruiting and training a Brotherhood of young assassins, deploying them in the city or calling on them to aid in your quest to strike at the heart of the Templar order.

Ezio will have plenty of equipment to help get the job done as well, including poison darts, hidden blades and guns, an advanced version of the flying machine seen in Assassin's Creed 2, and a parachute, just 'cause.

It sounds like the villa management from AC2 returns as well, only on a much larger scale, as Ezio spends his wealth to revitalize the crumbling city of Rome, unlocking new factions and missions along the way.

It also bears noting that Ubisoft Singapore is the team behind the excellent "secret location" platforming stages in ACII. More of those would be quite welcome.

That should assuage any fears that this will be a strictly multiplayer affair with a throwaway single player element. It might not be called Assassin's Creed III, but Brotherhood looks to be every bit the full sequel to Assassin's Creed II.

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood is due out during the 2010 holiday season.

Ubisoft has posted a teaser image for a new, unnamed project on Ubiworkshop.com. The striking illustration implies a connection to the Assassin's Creed franchise, especially in depicting the severed connection between an unfortunate man and his head. The ostentatious assassin's garb, the eagle and "A" and "C" lettering also seem to hint at an Egyptian outing for the historical hitman sim -- though it'll be in the form of a comic.

While the art itself was created by Grzegorz Domaradzki (also known as "Gabz"), Joystiq has confirmed that two other Montreal-based comic artists are involved. Karl Kerschl, known for his work on webcomic The Abominable Charles Christopher as well as DC Comics properties like The Flash, is collaborating on this Ubisoft project with Cameron Stewart, who recently completed a stint on DC's The Return of Bruce Wayne Batman & Robin. According to Kerschl, we can expect more information within the next few weeks.

Further evidence pointing to an Assassin's Creed comic series comes from Cameron Stewart's most recent post on his illustration blog: "... I do have a couple of secret irons in the fire, including an upcoming new comic series based on an immensely popular property," he wrote. "It's doubly exciting because I will be writing as well as drawing, partnered with my friend and studiomate Karl Kerschl."

The Ubiworkshop website itself is the last mystery, though a general trademark filing suggests that it will be a "computerized online retail store" dealing in merchandise like clothing, artists' materials, music and video games. An Assassin's Creed comic series could fit right in -- and hey, everyone's doing it. If not, the trademark also covers Ubisoft for selling "pre-recorded audio cassettes," in which case we might finally be able to buy some Beyond Good & Evil mix tapes.

zomg :god:
