Along with the name FC Porto comes to mind the Toyota European / South American Cup (Toyota Cup) match in 1987 against Peñarol of Uruguay played in heavy snow. This is the second time and the first time in 17 years for FC Porto to be in the Toyota Cup. For a long time, FC Porto had been overshadowed by the two best clubs in Lisbon, Benfica and Sporting, and thus has been referred to as the No.3 club in Portugal, but since the late 1980's, FC Porto's stars have been rising and they are now the undisputed No.1 club of Portugal.

The club was founded in Portugal's second largest city after Lisbon, in Porto, on September 28, 1893. The club was founded by an exporter of the region's specialty, wine. Eventually, the club began to play in official domestic games and later, against teams from outside Portugal. In 1935, FC Porto won their first league title.

In the 1930's, FC Porto in fact has won three league titles, but it is only in the late 1970's that the club is recognized as one of the country's top clubs. Once José Maria Pedroto, who played for the club in the 1950's became coach, in 1978 FC Porto wins the league title for the first time in 19 years. Under Coach Pedroto, a number of talented young players come of age and when Jorge Nuno Rima Pinto da Costa became President in 1981, he concentrated on the expansion of the club and the enhancement of the team. President Da Costa contributed greatly to the enhancement of the club's facilities and the increase in the number of club members, while making generous investments to strengthen the top team. He oversaw the major renovation of the Das Antas Stadium, home to FC Porto, and increased the number of seats from 65,000 to 90,000 as a representative measure of his endeavors. On top of such foundation building, the team proceeds to the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup finals in 1984 under Coach Artur Jorge who is also known to be Coach Pedroto's pupil, and in 1987, at the European Champions Cup (currently the UEFA Champions League), the team defeats Bayern München of then West Germany in the final 2-1 in a turn over, finally becoming the No.1 team in Europe and winning the ticket to the Toyota Cup.

In the 1990's FC Porto's domestic standing becomes solid. From the 1989-1990 season league title through to last season, the only year they failed to win a big title was in 2001-2002, making their most recent history a most remarkable one. In 1999, they achieve an unprecedented fete in Portugal by winning the league title for five consecutive years. And the time has come for FC Porto to play a major role in international football. Once Coach José Mourinho takes the helm in January 2002, he leads the team not only to win the league title and the Cup, but in the UEFA Cup, FC Porto defeats Celtic of Scotland 3-2 after an extension, winning the Cup for the third consecutive year. Last season, the club failed to win the Portuguese Cup to Benfica in a close match, but after winning the league title, FC Porto proceeded to win the UEFA Champions League title.

Immediately after FC Porto defeated AS Monaco of France 3-0 in the UEFA Champions League, Coach Mourinho sought new challenges at Chelsea of England. He was succeeded by Italian coach, Luigi Del Neri. Coach Del Neri led a virtually unknown club, AC Chievo of Italy, in a whirlwind in Serie A (Italy's A League). However, Coach Del Neri fails to establish a good relationship with the administrators and the players, and after coaching for a few pre-season games, and a period of approximately 2 and a half months, Coach Del Neri is relieved of his duties. In early August, as the new season neared its opening, the appointment of a Spanish coach, Víctor Fernández, was announced. Coach Fernández has coached for such Spanish clubs as Real Zaragoza and Real Betis, and at Celta de Vigo, he was reputed for creating and succeeding with an extremely aggressive team in offense, so it was said that he was the perfect match for FC Porto.

There were some major changes in the players since the end of the previous season as well. Deco, the play maker, has moved to FC Barcelona of Spain. Defender Paulo Ferreira and Ricardo Carvalho moved to Chelsea with Coach Mourinho.

On the other hand, the replacements have been extremely fruitful as well. In offense, a forward player of the Portugal National Team Hélder Postiga and midfielder Quaresma, who until then had been playing abroad had returned. Furthermore, the club succeeded in attracting Brazilian striker Luís Fabiano, who scored 8 goals and the highest number of goals in the Toyota Libertadores Cup, from São Paulo FC of Brazil, and offensive midfielder Diego, who, at the age of 19 displays an amazing instinct for the game, from Santos FC of Brazil. Furthermore, the team continues to be home to the highest scoring player in last season's League, Benedict McCarthy, and Derlei, who scored 2 goals in the UEFA Cup finals. This talented offense team is supported by the Portugal National Team starting members and defensive midfielder duo Costinha and Maniche. They are not only outstanding in defense, but contribute to offense with scoring skills as well. A recent new addition to the team is Giourkas Seitaridis of the Greece National Team, who recently won the European Championship. Seitaridis has been named the Best Right Side Back in the said Championship. Such veteran players as center back Jorge Costa and Goal Keeper Vítor Baía are also playing at their peak.

In November 2003, a new stadium named after the team's nickname, "DragÞo (or Dragon)" Stadium, has opened. The stadium was host to the opening game of the European Championship held in June through July this year.

Já vimos aqui um estrangeiro. Será que é imigrante colombiano?! Santa pachorra.

As restantes: Real Madrid, Bayern Munique, Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Arsenal, Red Star Belgrado e AC Milan.
