Ok...

Q: What's going on?
A: People using Sky3DS and Gateway cards under particular circumstances have been banned. It seems as though the bans started being doled out Wednesday, February 4th 2015, seemingly following the 9.5 update. Both users of cards have been reporting the issue, but not all users of cards have yet been banned.

Q: Wait, banned? How do they know?
A: Users in multiple countries have been getting error 002-0102, which normally means an internet connectivity problem. However, after contacting Nintendo, multiple users have confirmed that the CS says its a ban. They offer no further information at this time, and can not overturn it. As of now, there is no solid evidence that it is a NNID ban, and most conjecture/circumstance points to a MAC/SN ban. Users that are banned can...

Nintendo to release games on phones and tablets

Announces partnership with Japanese mobile firm DeNA.

Nintendo has announced it will begin releasing games for mobile phones and tablet devices.

The move to mobile - long requested by the company's investors - will begin later this year, when the first new game apps are released.

Nintendo is partnering with massive Japanese mobile firm DeNA to aid in the company's app development.

Speaking in a press conference this morning, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata confirmed Nintendo would take charge of the actual game development - the front-end, gameplay and UI that players actually see.

DeNA, meanwhile, will be working on supporting Nintendo by providing back-end services and server knowledge.

Nintendo and DeNA will also work together on a new membership service. This is the replacement for Club Nintendo that the company teased earlier this year.

This service will work across all platforms - PC, mobile, tablet, 3DS, Wii U and the upcoming NX - a new dedicated game system that Nintendo also announced.

More information on the Nintendo NX will be revealed next year, Iwata said.

"The new membership service will include multiple devices and create a connection between Nintendo and each individual consumer regardless of the device the consumer uses. This membership will form one of the core elements of the new Nintendo platform [NX] that I just mentioned."

Nintendo has said for a while that it wants to use mobile platforms to raise awareness of its own franchises.

Iwata confirmed Nintendo is not considering ports of existing games, but rather new experiences developed for and more suited to smart devices.

"We are challenging ourselves to redefine what Nintendo platform means," Iwata concluded. "We aim to achieve this goal as soon as possible.

"We hope to have output ready to show later this year."

Under the new agreement, Nintendo will acquire 10 per cent of DeNA, while DeNA will buy 1.24 per cent of Nintendo.

Nintendo NX is "new hardware with a brand new concept"

It's a "dedicated game system". More next year.

ORIGINAL STORY: During a press conference in Japan Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata mentioned new hardware, codenamed NX.

The press conference was held to announce a partnership between Nintendo and Japanese mobile game specialist DeNA to create mobile games based on Nintendo's intellectual property.

Nintendo also plans to create a new membership service, with DeNA, that will work across all Nintendo hardware, mobile devices and PC.

It was while announcing this new membership service that Iwata mentioned the new NX hardware.

"Nintendo, together with DeNA, will jointly develop a new membership service, which encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, the new hardware with a brand new concept NX, smart devices and PCs."

At this stage it's hard to tell what the NX is, exactly, but in an image published on Nintendo's official website, it's described as a "dedicated game system", which suggests a home console of some kind. We're told more information will be revealed next year.

UPDATE: Here's Iwata's quote on the NX, translated officially by Nintendo:

As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename "NX". It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.

Also, Iwata said Nintendo's new membership service would play a key role in NX.

Nintendo, together with DeNA, will jointly develop a new membership service which encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, the new hardware system with a brand-new concept, NX, and smart devices and PCs, and Nintendo will be the primary party to operate this new membership service.

Unlike the Club Nintendo membership service that Nintendo has been operating, the new membership service will include multiple devices and create a connection between Nintendo and each individual consumer regardless of the device the consumer uses. This membership will form one of the core elements of the new Nintendo platform that I just mentioned.
