The Wolf of Wall Street to Feature Epic Run Time

The 3-hour film narrowly avoids NC-17 rating.

If your family drives you crazy this Christmas, Martin Scorsese is giving you an excuse to leave the house.

THR reports that Scorsese's highly-anticipated The Wolf of Wall Street will be his longest film yet, running at 2 hours and 59 minutes -- credits being responsible for 6 minutes. This running time beats the director's 1995 film Casino by a single minute.

Surprisingly, The Wolf of Wall Street may actually have turned out longer had the film not been threatened with an NC-17 rating. Apparently, the story of Wall Street broker Jordan Belfort's (Leonardo DiCaprio) descent into hedonism is more show, less tell. The rampant sex and drug abuse caught the attention of the ratings board, requiring talks with Scorsese and Paramount to discuss what to edit out.

It isn't known how much was cut, but there is no way Paramount would risk an NC-17 rating on a movie that cost over $100 million to make. And since Scorsese is not known for releasing director's cuts, we may never know the true debauchery he originally envisioned.

The Wolf of Wall Street is set to hit theaters on December 25.
