SkyDrive - 'Upgrade my storage', and your 25GB will be preserved....

anyway

(...)

If the 7GB of storage now being offered to free users isn't enough for you, there's also the option to purchase more space. You can take a look at the different plans by clicking 'manage storage' on your SkyDrive page.

As you can see, there's a wide variety of plans being offered at competitive prices. Compared to Dropbox's Pro 100 plan (100GB, $199 a year), SkyDrive +100 looks like a steal.

If you're an existing SkyDrive user (as of 22 April 2012), Microsoft will reward your loyalty by letting you keep your current 25GB of storage. If you're already using over 7GB of storage in your SkyDrive, your account will already have been upgraded automatically. If not, you'll have to opt-in to keep your full 25GB allowance. Just visit your SkyDrive storage page, click 'Upgrade my storage', and your 25GB will be preserved. You can find out more about this on Microsoft's SkyDrive limited time loyalty offer page.

Microsoft is also offering updated SkyDrive apps for the iPhone and iPad from today, including support for Retina Displays.

pelo sim, pelo não...

edit: e já agora, estava a ler aqui

And unlike before, you can upload big files (up to 2 GB) and automatically sync files or entire folders to SkyDrive right from your PC.

Brin acknowledged that some people were anxious about the amount of their data that was now in the reach of US authorities because it sits on Google's servers. He said the company was periodically forced to hand over data and sometimes prevented by legal restrictions from even notifying users that it had done so.

You retain ownership of any intellectual property rights that you hold in that content. In short, what belongs to you stays yours.

Is Google Drive worse for privacy than iCloud, Skydrive, and Dropbox?

...

In the end, though, the actual wording of these documents doesn't reveal much — they all set out to do the same thing, and they all accomplish their goals. What's most important is how much trust you're willing to give companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Dropbox as more and more of your data moves to the cloud. Contracts are meaningful and important, but even the most noble promises can easily be broken. It's actions and history that have consequences, and companies that deal with user data on the web need to start building a history of squeaky-clean behavior before any of us can feel totally comfortable living in the cloud.

E a Microsoft utiliza estritamente no âmbito do serviço.

Two new cloud storage services were unveiled this week and when you store your information in the cloud, one issue comes to mind, privacy.

Google Drive and Skydrive are both backed by massive corporations who would love to have you store your information on their platters. If you are already in one ecosystem such as Gmail, Google Docs, Android, and Google+, it would make sense to then use Google Drive. Likewise, if you use Hotmail/Live, Windows Phone, Xbox and have a Windows PC, Skydrive would seem like a natural choice as well.

But, no matter which service you choose, make sure to check them out completely, including their TOS. There is a notable difference between the two services and we have posted below a critical component of each platforms stance regarding your content.

Here is Microsoft’s stance on your content:

5. Your content

Except for material that we license to you, we don't claim ownership of the content you provide on the service. Your content remains your content. We also don't control, verify, or endorse the content that you and others make available on the service.

You control who may access your content. If you share content in public areas of the service or in shared areas available to others you've chosen, then you agree that anyone you've shared content with may use that content. When you give others access to your content on the service, you grant them free, nonexclusive permission to use, reproduce, distribute, display, transmit, and communicate to the public the content solely in connection with the service and other products and services made available by Microsoft. If you don't want others to have those rights, don't use the service to share your content.

You understand that Microsoft may need, and you hereby grant Microsoft the right, to use, modify, adapt, reproduce, distribute, and display content posted on the service solely to the extent necessary to provide the service.

Please respect the rights of artists, inventors, and creators. Content may be protected by copyright. People appearing in content may have a right to control the use of their image. If you share content on the service in a way that infringes others' copyrights, other intellectual property rights, or privacy rights, you're breaching this contract. You represent and warrant that you have all the rights necessary for you to grant the rights in this section and the use of the content doesn't violate any law. We won't pay you for your content. We may refuse to publish your content for any or no reason. We may remove your content from the service at any time if you breach this contract or if we cancel or suspend the service.

Posted below are Google’s terms of service for its Cloud storage:

Your Content in our Services

Some of our Services allow you to submit content. You retain ownership of any intellectual property rights that you hold in that content. In short, what belongs to you stays yours.

When you upload or otherwise submit content to our Services, you give Google (and those we work with) a worldwide license to use, host, store, reproduce, modify, create derivative works (such as those resulting from translations, adaptations or other changes we make so that your content works better with our Services), communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute such content. The rights you grant in this license are for the limited purpose of operating, promoting, and improving our Services, and to develop new ones. This license continues even if you stop using our Services (for example, for a business listing you have added to Google Maps). Some Services may offer you ways to access and remove content that has been provided to that Service. Also, in some of our Services, there are terms or settings that narrow the scope of our use of the content submitted in those Services. Make sure you have the necessary rights to grant us this license for any content that you submit to our Services.

There is one notable difference, with Skydrive, Microsoft will only use your content "solely to the extent necessary to provide the service" which means that it is used to maintain the product, not for advertising purposes. When you upload your content to Google, you are giving them access to use your work however they see fit. It should be noted that neither service is claiming ownership of your content.

It is a small but notable difference. Google already uses your content in many ways to deliver targeted advertising and Microsoft has a position of letting you decide what to do with your content. Which is best for you? That's a personal decision.

SkyDrive gets a new, smaller feature; shortlinks

Microsoft’s SkyDrive has been getting a lot of attention recently, after revamping the service and pushing out new applications, the service is aiming to become your preferred cloud storage service. But just because they have pushed out some major changes recently, this doesn’t mean they are done with the product; far from it.

0310.sharedialog_5f00_shortened_5f00_38ced29e.png

The SkyDrive team has linked up with bit.ly to offer new shortened URLs - a lot shorter, 40% shorter to be exact according to their post. The previous SkyDrive links were a bit of the fail-whale variety as some of them were too long to fit in to a single tweet, a bit of an issue when trying to share something on Twitter.

6521.bitly_5f00_stats_5f00_25ada5f2.png

Like other bit.ly links, you can also track the stats of your links by adding the + sign to the end of link. You also have the ability to use your own custom domain to shorten the links and the links do support OpenGraph.

While the new service is not a breakthrough in terms of usability or features, it is one more small enhancement to the service that will help it remain appealing in the market which is quickly becoming highly competitive with corporate juggernauts.

Novo update...

SkyDrive Gets New Logo and Window

The recent automatic update to SkyDrive for Windows (Version 16.4.6003.0710), released yesterday, offers a new status window that tells the user how SkyDrive is behaving. Many people asked for a simple way to check this. Now, after updating, when you click SkyDrive in the system tray, a small status window appears. It lets you know if SkyDrive is up to date, and gives you the time at which SkyDrive was last updated in addition to information on megabytes and files being transferred.

The new window also has new options in the context menu - "View sync problems" and "Report a problem" - that will make it easier to solve problems in the system. These are welcome features for SkyDrive power users. Most of the changes in this update are not visible to users, though, states Mike Torres, from Microsoft. The Windows Blog reports Mike Torres saying that, as with most updates, "this one improves performance, reliability, and compatibility of SkyDrive," so people depending on the service can rely on the system to automatically sync files.

Along with the update, Microsoft introduced a redesigned logo. Mike Torres says that, "With the upcoming release of Windows 8, the time was right to redesign the SkyDrive logo. The refreshed logo is a natural evolution of the work we’re doing across Microsoft to deliver a more consistent experience across all of our products."

If you do not have Skydrive, you can download the new app from the SkyDrive website.
