The best ever.

The match was billed as epic and that's how it turned out. Epics are usually all encompassing works either literary or in a movie, performance, what have you.

Austin had come back that September from the car crash thing, settled it with Triple H then set his sights on winning the title. The title match against the Rock itself, was a chronology of Austin's entire career with all sorts of things tossed in there to amplify it. The Million dollar dream from his days as 'ring master'. The sharpshooter sequence to Austin's match with Bret that really vaulted him to superstardom. The brashness of Austin trash talking, his brawling, everything.

It told the entire story of Austin's career. But then Austin hit the stunner... and a few more and couldn't win. The old Austin wasn't good enough to beat the Rock. For the first time Austin didn't have the heart of his opponent. He knew it going in, and was prepared for it.

Vince came down which really slammed the book shut on his days as the top baby face. Austin cheated to win the match. Blatently cheated. Austin ALWAYS did heelish things as a babyface, but if you watch a lot of his matches, he never actually cheated to win a match. It was part of what made his character so great.

So they spend a half hour or so establishing Austin's entire career and run as a babyface and then BANG, they completely change directions and he sides with the LAST person you'd expect him to side with. Let's not forget this was all done in Austin's homestate of Texas....

The Rock played his part beautifully. The Rock was the ultimate babyface taking EVERYTHING Austin could dish out on his own. No one has ever looked stronger in LOSING a title that I can think of.

Usually, I'm with you, especially when it comes to the main event at Wrestlemania. It almost always has to be a clean win. BUT, in this case, given the story told, it brought SO MUCH together that couldn't have possibly been done had Austin ever won clean and stayed a babyface. Like it or not, there was absolutely nowehre they could have gone with Austin as a babyface they hadn't gone before with the POSSIBLE exception of Benoit (who wasn't a main event guy at that time), Jericho (see Benoit), or Angle... It would have been same old song and dance. So in my opinion, it worked out wonderfully.

:god:

Posso estar confuso.
