Scrolls Announced!

Recommended Posts

Markus "Notch" Persson's Minecraft has been an Internet sensation for the last year or so, and many wondered what his company, Mojang, would do next. Well, we can tell you this: it's not a more polished or graphically intensive version of Minecraft. Instead, it is a fantasy themed strategy game entitled Scrolls.

At GDC, Persson made a personal appearance to announce the game. The game's website has launched, and offers some insight as to the nature of Scrolls:

"Scrolls is Mojang's next game and offers a new and unique gameplay where you fight to maneuver your opponent on the battlefield using the destructive powers in your collection of magical scrolls."

According to the site, the game will feature elements from both collectible card games like Magic: The Gathering and board games. It's also been in the works for a while, according to lead designer Jakob Porser:

"Five years ago, me and Markus "Notch" Persson started talking about a game we felt was missing in the gaming market. A game we desperately wanted to play, but were unable to as it had not been developed. The game we envisioned had elements from the collectible card genre as well as from traditional board games. It would be a strategic game with a strong foundation in tactical gameplay but with a touch of random [sic] and chance guaranteeing a never-ending stream of curve balls."

Sounds interesting! After Minecraft, we expect there will be a high degree of interest in the next Mojang project.
