Dead Island is a non-linear first-person shooter in which you find yourself on an island plunged into chaos. It's a place where the word "dead" has an entirely new meaning. Face the nightmare and fight for survival.

Use anything you find in your surroundings as a weapon. Make decisions that influence the entire world around you, take advantage of opponent behavior and game physics, and explore the secrets hidden in the darkest regions of the island.

"Dead Island" movie rights picked up after game trailer goes viral

When the trailer for the upcoming Techland zombie survival video game “Dead Island” was released online last week, it went viral and racked up a million hits within 24 hours. A reaction like that naturally attracts Hollywood’s attention, and on Friday Sean Daniel of the Sean Daniel Company (behind the Mummy franchise) and Union Entertainment closed a deal for the film rights.

According to a report on Moviefone, The Sean Daniel Company paid an undisclosed amount to “Dead Island” game publisher Deep Silver, and game developer Techland. Though there is no script, actors, shooting dates or director attached to the film version yet, Daniel’s producer credentials make me optimistic. When it does get made, I think it will be a great addition to the zombie genre. Apparently, like flies to the undead, agencies and studios are circling Daniel with story ideas and talent packages.

And the announcement trailer that spawned this sudden “Dead Island” rage? A sleek, poignant, 3-minute zombie animated mini-movie by Axis Animation. Set on a tropical island infested with zombies, it plays backwards and forwards simultaneously, portraying a young family in a haunting scenario. It features some great animation and a fitting melancholy score. After the rapid and emotional responses to the game trailer, video game makers are quick to point out that the characters featured in the trailer aren’t necessarily found in the game, but just characters that could be found in the world of “Dead Island.” In the film version, though, the game trailer mini-story could be used and exploited to engender the same kind of vast, emotional response in movie-goers.

“Dead Island” is a first-person shooter survival horror video game for XBOX 360 and PlayStation 3. In a refreshing change from other zombie video games, the weapons arsenal will only contain things you might actually find on an island resort that has been overrun with zombies, and players will have to discover how to convert what is available to them into death dealers. This game is slated for release later this year.
