  • 2 weeks later...

positioned Battlefield 3 as its Call of Duty killer this holiday season, but don't expect the military first-person shooters to go head-to-head every year. In a new interview with Gamerzines, Battlefield 3 executive producer Patrick Bach said that annualizing the franchise would be a mistake.

EA has

"EA would never force us to release a game every year," Bach told the site. "I think that would dilute the vision of the franchise, and you will eventually kill the franchise by doing that."

He did acknowledge that it might be possible in theory for the series to be split between multiple studios to alternate releases (the way Activision does with Call of Duty) but said there weren't plans to do that currently. He also appeared skeptical that it could be done without a drop-off in quality.

"To us, we need the time to be able to create the next game that consumers will hopefully like," Bach said. "If we were to release another big Battlefield title next year, that would mean that we'd have less than a year to build it, and that would mean that we'd have to have another studio building it for us, which would mean it wouldn't have that DICE seal of approval, which would mean they'd just have to release a copy of the game we just released. Ugh, no."

While the Battlefield franchise has maintained an annualized presence in recent years with spin-offs like Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (2010), the free-to-play Battlefield Heroes (2009), the downloadable Battlefield 1943 (2009), and the original Bad Company (2008), it will have taken the series a decade to see its third main entry. Battlefield 3 is set to launch October 25 in North America on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Origin To Delete Inactive Accounts?

origin.jpg

A number of readers have written in to express concern about this clause in the terms of service for Electronic Arts’ new digital distribution, Origin. Here’s the key bit: “If you have not used your Entitlements or Account for twenty four (24) months or more and your Account has associated Entitlements, your Entitlements will expire and your Account may be cancelled for non-use.” The “entitlements” it’s talking about are “paid and free downloadable content, unlockable content, digital and/or virtual assets, rights of use tied to unlock keys or codes, serial codes and/or online authentication of any kind, in-game achievements and virtual or fictional currency.”

We’ve asked Electronic Arts for clarification on this, but it suggests you might lose DLC, achievements, and even your account if you don’t log on for two years. Not exactly the kind of permanence we’ve come to expect from certain online services, is it? I can think of quite a few services I’ve not logged into for two years, and I’d still expect all my stuff to be there. Is anyone aware of similar clauses in other distribution systems or online game services?

To No One’s Surprise, All PC Installs of Battlefield 3 will Require Origin

Just for the record, if you're going to play Battlefield 3 on the PC, you're going to create and use an Electronic Arts Origin account. Period. Developer DICE has confirmed what, really, shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, a couple days ago on Twitter.

This covers retail copies on DVD, but we can assume it extends to any digital copy bought from a download service (other than, ahem, Steam) because well, why the hell wouldn't it. This is EA's new PC digital distribution service, it makes sense it would use its biggest selling PC title to drive people to it, like it or not.

So save yourself the inconvenience come October, just go ahead and create your account and download the client now. Just remember, if you're abducted by aliens and don't log in for two whole years EA can delete your account, burn down your house, ruin your credit, sell your children into slavery, blah blah etc. But hey, you're still playing Battlefield, not some over-marketed military shooter pumped out by an evil big-name publisher.

Battlefield 3 Origin preorders get free PC game - Report

Purported email from EA says those who reserve DICE's shooter by end of the month via online store can score a copy of Mass Effect 2, Medal of Honor, or Dead Space 2.

Shooter fans who preorder DICE's upcoming modern shooter Battlefield 3 through Electronic Arts' recently launched online store Origin are awarded early access to the game's beta period. However, that's not the only big bonus for reserving the title through EA's virtual marketplace, according to a report.

An email purportedly from EA forwarded to Ars Technica by a reader states that those who preorder Battlefield 3 via Origin can get a free downloadable PC game for doing so. Offered titles include Mass Effect 2, Dead Space 2, and Medal of Honor. According to the email, the offer expires at the end of the month.

Battlefield 3's Origin listing does not mention anything about the free game offer, and as of press time, EA had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment.

As for the game, Battlefield 3 will sport both a single-player campaign and an online component, which can be played with up to 64 players (for the PC version only). Battlefield 3 will support co-op play for its campaign and will let gamers pilot jets, among other vehicles. Additionally, Battlefield 3 will run on DICE's updated Frostbite 2 engine.
