Mass Effect no cinema!

BioWare: Hollywood Very Interested in Mass Effect Film

BioWare's Casey Hudson, the project director for Mass Effect 2, acknowledged a "tremendous amount of interest" from Hollywood in a Mass Effect film but vows such a movie, if done, will be done right or not at all.

"Obviously we have a tremendous amount of interest from people in Hollywood to make a major motion picture about 'Mass Effect,'" Hudson told the MTV Movies Blog. "The most important thing for us is, we don't just want to see a movie get made. We want to see a great movie get made, if it's going to get done at all."

Way back in the middle of 2008, Avi Arad, best known for several successful (and some less so) comic-book adaptations, optioned the rights to a Mass Effect film. But there has been no news of such a project since then. This may be deliberate. Hudson's comments make it apparent that BioWare isn't in a hurry and wants to be sure the film has a story worthy of this franchise.

"We're just looking at our options there, but waiting to make sure we have something really right before we do it," he told MTV Movies.

Mass Effect: The Movie Is Really Happening

BioWare's epic sci-fi role playing game is on its way to a theater near you, with Legendary Pictures—the studio banking on the notion that video game movies will be a Big Deal—reportedly picking up the film rights.

According to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog, Legendary has set events in motion that may ultimately bring Commander Shepard and his merry Mass Effect co-stars to the silver screen. Screenwriter Mark Protosevich, whose credits include The Cell, I Am Legend and Thor, is "in talks" to adapt the game.

Mass Effect was optioned in 2008 by ex-Marvel producer Avi Arad. Legendary has plenty of other video game fare in the works, with World of Warcraft and Gears of War flicks trying to get off the ground.

Seems BioWare wasn't blowing smoke when it said Hollywood was "very interested" in the Mass Effect franchise. Whether Mass Effect will ultimately reach celluloid is up to the movie gods.

Your Mass Effect dream casting suggestions are welcome in the comments.

Mass Effect’s Depth Will Save It From the Fate of Most Video Game Movies

Mass Effect won't suffer the same fate as other video game movies, said the screenwriter assigned to the project, because it draws on far more than the "seductive" visuals and active sequences that all video games are known for, whether or not they are accompanied by a story with any depth.

"In the early days [of video game adaptations], the idea was, let's try to recreate this, instead of pausing and asking is this a good story," said Mark Protosevich. "Does it have interesting concepts, does it have interesting philosophies and themes? I think most games fail that test. This doesn not."

Little was divulged about the film, which is known to release in 2012, but does not have a specific date. (The panel showed a trailer for Mass Effect 3 at its beginning). Protosevich and Casey Hudson, the game's creator, discussed the concepts and challenges of pulling off such a large narrative, spanning three games whose final release will be March 6, 2012.

"This is a really rich world and what Casey and his team have done is create a universe as rich as Star Wars and Lord of the Rings," Protosevich said. "It is a challenge to condene that to a sinle feature film."

There Will be no Female Shepard, Seth Green or Video Game Stories In the Mass Effect Movie

Answering questions that they didn't have time to answer during Comic-Con a few months back, the producers of the upcoming Mass Effect movie have posted a few bits of extra info on the project on the website of film company Legendary Pictures.

While dating back to last month, the blog was updated in silence, so much so that nobody really took notice of it. Until now!

While this shouldn't be too big a surprise, the movie will focus on a male Commander Shepard and not the female version. It's also revealed that Seth Green's character of Joker won't be played by Seth Green, which at first sounds absolutely incredulous, until you remember in the movie you'd have to look at Seth Green, and he just doesn't look the part.

The producers also reveal that the movie won't be based on the existing games; it'll instead be a "a completely new story". Which is...alarming.
