Eric, que participou nos jogos sem ter “os mínimos” por estar ao abrigo de um acordo que visava o melhoramento das condições da prática desportiva em países em vias de desenvolvimento, tinha cerca de meio ano para preparar as sua participação nas olimpíadas de Sidney. O atleta, de 22 anos, que treinava na piscina de um hotel da capital do seu país, nunca nadou mais de 50 metros seguidos. Logo quando já em Sidney participou nas qualificações para a prova dos 100m, aquilo mais lhe parecia uma maratona. (Segundo afirmações do próprio, “os últimos 15 metros foram muito difíceis”.)Nervoso, Eric coloca os óculos com a mestria de um neurocirurgião com luvas de boxe e olha impressionado para os adversários: Karim Bare da Nigéria e Farkhod Oripov do Tadjiquistão (é assim que se escreve, certo). No entanto, Eric mal sabia eles iriam ser desqualificados por falsa partida, que iria ganhar aquela prova (sendo o único participante era complicado não ganhar!), e que se iria um herói ao fazer cair o record nacional da modalidade! E, mais importante, uma figura mundial com o seu estilo peculiar de natação, com a cabeça sempre fora de água e a bater os pés que nem um louco!Ainda mais outra curiosidade, sobre PEQUIM!:O nadador africano Eric Moussambani ficou de fora dos Jogos porque as autoridades de Guiné Equatorial perderam a foto de seu passaporte, impedindo-o de se inscrever.
