They soon discover that each has a hidden secret from their past which is revealed, and soon after, they turn up dead. Yet, are they really dead? Or is it just part of some very real and cruel April Fool's jokes? The hostess, Muffy, is the only one who apparently knows what's going on. But then again, is it really her doing the killing?

1. Background

Cult film fans around the world can finally rejoice for the greatest hidden treasure of cult cinema is coming in a fully uncut completely re-mastered edition. Director Teruo Ishii’s astonishing “Horrors of Malformed Men” long suppressed in its home country is making its worldwide home video debut from Synapse Films.

2. Plot

After escaping from an asylum young medical student Hirosuke assumes the identity of a dead man in order to solve the mystery of a weird doppelganger whose picture he sees in the newspaper. Traveling to faraway Panorama Island he discovers a mad scientist surgically remaking normal human beings into misshapen monsters but that is only the beginning. Hirosuke soon learns the horrible truth about the island and his own family’s shameful past and finds himself plunged into the depths of incest, murder and madness.

III. Review

One of the most unique and bizarre films ever made, and coming from Japan's long, unique, and often bizarre history of films, that is saying something. The fact that it is still to this day banned in it's native Japan is another sticking point.

“Horrors of Malformed Men” is a twisted, artsy, perverse, at times erotic and brutal revenge horror tale with enough secrets and plot developments for ten movies. It is a revenge film that out revenges Oldboy, perhaps gave the inspiration for the seemingly commonplace of black hair in Asian horror films as a way to be scary, and would have the actors who played the "freaks" in Tod Browning's Freaks finding moments of optimism upon viewing for being naturally malformed.

An insane asylum, psychedelic dancers in silver body paint, Siamese twins, a pond full of beautiful naked women who are fed from a boat, a bizarre family mystery, matching swastika scars on the feet of two different men - one alive and one dead, second-hand cannibalism via crustacean, women sewed to sheep, an island of custom made freaks, an murder scene and a revenge plot so insanely convoluted are just some of the head-spinning madness "Horrors of Malformed Men" has to offer.

The sensational cover of the DVD is extremely misleading; nevertheless cult cinema and grind-house aficionados should consider this a must-see. The gore is less than one would think, but there is plenty of sex, bizarre visuals, and insane and disturbing material here to make this a memorable experience for any exploitation fan. The only drawback is the poor makeup.
