While still fiddling with the GeForce 9800 GX2, Nvidia has also taken the time to develop its first microprocessor for mobile phones. Dubbed APX 2500, the 65nm-built chip features a 750 MHz ARM 11 core and an image processor, a pair that provides support for 12 megapixel imaging, 720p decoding and graphics performance that matches desktop GeForce 6 GPUs, although Nvidia didn't say if the comparison parts are from the low-end or mid-range (or even high-end) segments.

The low-power chip is set to dissipate up to 200milliW and it will be just the spear head of Nvidia's new mobile focus which will see it release more multimedia processors in the coming years with the plan being to have its products used by first-tier manufacturers by the end of next year. Until then though, the APX 2500 will have to start shipping and that won't happen until the end of Q2, in June.

Detalhes:

- 65nm

In one word or less: wow. NVIDIA's MWC announcement of the APX 2500 cellphone applications processor was a stunner and we expect the cellular community is going to welcome them with open arms. We've covered what the hardware is all about, but we've also found out it'll be packin' 7.2 Mbps HSDPA in many flavors, quad-band GSM, WiFi, Bluetooth, and it frickin' plays Quake 3, like a monster. While gaming doesn't mean it'll be a successful device, the 2500 certainly seems to have the grunt to get some serious work done and with its Windows Mobile 6 underpinnings, it'll play well with current software. The current developer reference sample is a bit on the fat side, though we expect the likes of HTC will put this thing on serious diet before it gets out to and into our pockets. Follow the link to see the admittedly -- by NVIDIA -- iPhone-esque GUI experience -- and bezel, earpiece, face.
