On August 2, 2007 Brown landed the first 720 on a mega ramp in competition at the Summer X Games, but on the ensuing trick (the second half of his run), he lost his balance, flew into the air, and fell about 45 feet (15 meters) onto the ramp below. This was his fifth and final run. The collision with the ramp was so hard, it knocked both of his shoes off. ESPN commentators called the incident the "heaviest slam they had ever seen". Tony Hawk compared it to walking off a three-story building and landing on the concrete. Incredibly, Brown managed to walk away from the scene under his own power, [2][3][4] but was found to have sustained liver and lung contusions and stress fractures in his vertebra as well as a small hand fracture. [5]

Brown had won the silver medal in the X Games' Skateboard Big Air in 2007 on his second run.

Brown was presented Trick of the Day on Saturday August 4, 2007. Also on this day returned to X Games Thirteen on August 4, 2007 to a cheering crowd at The Home Depot Center. Brown returned to X Games and walked into The Home Depot Center under his own power holding a cane in his left hand on August 4, 2007. Sal Masekela referred to it as an "electrifying moment at X Games, not at X Games Thirteen but a moment we will ever forget at X Games period." Sal Masekela was referring both to the moment that the fall happened and his return to The Home Depot Center in Los Angeles, California. Sal Masekela then referred to Jake Brown as "Unbreakable", "Jake "unbreakable" Brown."

On August 5, 2007 during a discussing with Jake Brown on ESPN, Sal Masekela again referred to Jake Brown as "unbreakable." Sal asked Jake what it was like to receive a standing ovation from the Home Depot crowd after being released from the hospital on the previous day. Jake responded by saying "that was amazing man, I couldn't believe it." Jake went on to say that his body feels a little better and that it is tough to watch and not participate in Vert.
